Dawson County Veterinary Clinic is a privately owned practice by Drs. Kyle and Cara Voss. The couple bought the clinic from Dr. Bill Tidball of Beach, ND in 2006. The well established practice has served the needs of the community for over 25 years. In 2024, Dr. Jeff Shucker joined the practice. Frequently Asked Questions

  • What forms of payment does Dawson County Veterinary Clinic accept?

Dawson County Veterinary Clinic accepts VISA, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX, Tap Pay, cash, and approved local checks. Payment is due when services are rendered.

  • Is deworming really necessary for indoor pets?

Yes. Indoor pets still need deworming because parasites can enter the home through fleas, shoes, clothing, infected rodents, or other household pets. Some parasites are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted to humans. Children, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised people are particularly at risk.

Dawson County Veterinary Clinic can perform fecal testing to detect parasites and recommend several effective parasite control options.

  • What vaccinations are required for boarding?

Most reputable boarding facilities require proof of vaccination from a licensed veterinarian.

    • Dogs: Typically require Parvo/Distemper/Lepto vaccines, Rabies, and Kennel Cough vaccination.
    • Cats: Typically require feline distemper/leukemia and Rabies vaccinations.

Some boarding facilities may also require a negative fecal test before accepting pets.

  • Does your clinic use mRNA or RNA vaccines?

Dawson County Veterinary Clinic currently does not carry the mRNA or RNA particle vaccine line.

mRNA vaccines and RNA particle vaccines are not the same, as they use different methods to stimulate an immune response. RNA vaccines cannot produce a live virus, so there is no viral shedding.

  • Does my pet really need pre-anesthetic blood work even if they look healthy?

Yes. Pets naturally hide signs of illness and pain. An animal can lose a significant amount of kidney function before any outward symptoms appear.

The liver and kidneys are responsible for metabolizing and clearing medications from an animal's system. Pre-anesthetic blood work helps assess whether these organs are functioning properly and whether your pet can safely process anesthetic medications and recover from anesthesia.

  • Does Dawson County Veterinary Clinic see emergencies?

As a dedicated part of our rural community, we understand how vital emergency care is, and we always want to help when we can. However, due to our limited staff size, we cannot provide 24/7 emergency coverage.

If you have a late-night emergency or our veterinarians are unavailable, please visit our website for more information about emergency coverage and availability.
